The standard phlebotomy course at the Texas School of Phlebotomy is a 6 or 8-week program that provides students with skills and training to become a certified Phlebotomy Technician. The course includes lecture-discussion and practical instruction, and upon completion, students receive a Certificate of Completion. Prerequisites for the course are a high school diploma/transcripts or GED, 18 years of age or older, and any government-issued photo ID.

St. Philip’s College

St. Philip’s College empowers students to become entry-level Phlebotomists with its Healthcare Technician: Phlebotomy Level 1 Certificate program. Students learn the fundamentals of healthcare, medical terminology, technical calculations and phlebotomy in an engaging environment while applying their knowledge through clinical experiences at hospitals and clinics nearby.

Upon successful completion of the program, students are eligible to take the Phlebotomy Blood Technician (PBT) national certification exam administered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). Even though Texas does not require licensing exams for phlebotomists, this program offers them the ability to meet licensing requirements in other states.

Admission to the Phlebotomy program includes submission of an application via post-stamped mail directly to the program director. Priority consideration will be given to students who are interested in working as a phlebotomist, and those who have taken or are enrolled to take HITT 1305: Medical Terminology I. Enrollment is on a first-come, first serve basis and is limited to the first 15 students.

In order to attend clinical rotations, students must complete certain immunizations and other requirements at their own expense. These include a TB Skin Test (within the current year), Tetanus/Diptheria/Pertussis (DTAP), Mumps/Measles/Rubella (MMR), Hepatitis B, Varicella, Bacterial Meningitis and a seasonal flu shot. Additionally, students are required to provide proof of medical/health insurance coverage and complete an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Health Care Provider CPR course for certification (online course not permitted). The Clinical Rotation Course is offered in the second flex semester of the Fall and Spring semesters, with a 3-week rotation consisting of 40 hours per week from Mondays through Fridays during the day. A Thursday morning PLAB 1223 class may be offered in the Spring, however it is primarily reserved for MLT students and requires permission from the program director to enroll. The application deadline for Fall is July 15, and November 30 for the Spring semester.
