Harris County Department of Education (Free Classes)

Harris County offers free phlebotomy training in Houston through their Phlebotomy Certification Program at the Harris County Department of Education (HCDE). These free phlebotomy classes in Houston provide skill development in various blood collection methods while emphasizing safety, quality assurance, patient identification, and specimen handling. The program covers techniques for drawing blood from adults, children, and infants, ensuring students are well-prepared for the diverse needs of patients.

Unfortunately, specific class schedules are currently unavailable, as they are to be announced (TBA). Interested individuals are encouraged to fill out a survey to be placed on the waiting list. Upon availability, HCDE will notify individuals with further information. For inquiries, the contact number is 713-692-6216.

To enroll in the free program, HCDE has specific requirements that must be met. Applicants need to possess a High School Diploma or GED Certificate and should not hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. They are also required to provide a Photo ID and Social Security Card. Committing to six weeks of training is necessary, as well as attending additional support classes, which may be conducted virtually. Placement tests and a certification test are part of the program requirements.

Allied Health, the division responsible for the program, mandates applicants to pass a background check and drug test. These measures ensure the safety and security of participants throughout the training.

HCDE and the Texas Workforce Commission collaborate to provide students with the opportunity to gain both academic and workforce skills simultaneously. Rochelle Bell, an adult basic education teacher, supports students in the academic aspects, assisting with math and language skills and helping them develop effective memorization and review techniques. Netta Trahan, a phlebotomy teacher with 30 years of experience in drawing blood, brings her clinical expertise to the classroom. She guides students in mastering the necessary skills for their future careers. The program also focuses on customer service techniques to ensure patients feel comfortable during the blood collection process.

During the initial stages of the program, students gain hands-on experience by practicing blood drawing techniques on one another. This practical approach allows them to develop their skills in a supportive and supervised environment.

Because the Harris County Department of Education Phlebotomy Program training is free to take, we would highly recommend the program. However, the availability of classes and the program is unreliable and not always open, and because it is free there will be many applicants and open spots fill up quickly. The lack of specific class schedules may pose challenges for prospective students in planning their commitments. Additionally many individuals may not qualify based on prior education experience. However, by emphasizing safety, quality assurance, and patient care, the program prepares students to handle diverse populations and effectively collect blood specimens. The collaboration between HCDE and the Texas Workforce Commission provides students with the opportunity to acquire essential academic and workforce skills.
