This is an 88 hour program, with 48 hours of lecture time and 40 hours of clinical experience. Students will have the opportunity to complete 50 venipunctures, 10 capillary punctures, and observation of two arterial punctures. Students will learn about the various degrees of complicated blood draws and proper blood collection techniques. Students will work with laboratory equipment and laboratory testing procedures. Additionally, students will learn about patient communication, including the patient Bill of Rights and HIPPA requirements.

Los Angeles Career College

The Los Angeles Career College offers a California Department of Public Health approved phlebotomy course. The course is a two week program that involves 80 hours of instruction. The course is split into 40 hours of classroom instruction and 40 hours of lab work. Coursework pertains to anatomy, medical terminology, specimen collection, collection risk factors and best practices. Students who pass the course can become eligible to be a certified and licensed phlebotomist in California. During the 40 hours of lab externship, students will conduct venipuncture and skin punctures. Students are also taught on the principles of basic patient service, safety, clerical functions and proper use of blood equipment.
