Phlebotomist technicians draw blood and label and collect samples. Phlebotomists draw blood for the purpose of diagnostics, either by venipuncture or dermal puncture. Venipuncture is through the vein, and dermal puncture is through the skin.
They may also remove a prescribed amount of blood from patients with a condition called polycythemia, which causes the patient to overproduce red blood cells. Another role is to remove blood for transfusions.
Well, their primary duty is to collect samples, prepare them for analysis, and transport them, there are other related duties they perform. The majority of phlebotomists are also trained in taking vital signs and collecting non-blood samples. Successful phlebotomists tend to possess certain characteristics, including empathy, organization skills, compassion, the ability to handle stress, and great people skills.

Wyoming phlebotomy program requirements
Accredited schools are monitored by accreditation bodies such as the National Phlebotomy Association (NPA) and the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS). These organizations set standards and define requirements for certification. Below are the minimum requirements needed to enroll in a training program;
- 18 years old
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Current immunization records
The accreditation bodies also oversee testing, and they provide certification tests as well as continuing education.
Training can be completed in 4 to 6 months in most cases. It depends on your schedule and the number of hours you put in per month. Training costs anywhere from $700 to $800 on average. You can expect to study subjects such as:
- Basic phlebotomy
- History of Phlebotomy
- Basic chemistry
- Bloodborne diseases
- Sanitization and safety
- Handling samples
- HIPAA and OSHA regulations
By the time you’re done with training, you will have all the skills and knowledge needed to pass the certification test. Your training will be split 50/50 between theory and Hands-On training with patients. Once you’ve completed around 20 hours of classroom work in 20 hours of practice under supervision, you can start working independently during training. This does not require certification.
