A certified phlebotomy technician (CPT) is a healthcare professional who collects blood samples from patients for diagnostic testing. Phlebotomists are usually employed by hospitals, clinics, or blood donor centers.
Phlebotomists are responsible for a variety of duties related to the collection of blood specimens. They must be familiar with blood collection procedures, as well as safety protocols for handling blood specimens. In addition to blood collection, phlebotomists may also be responsible for processing lab orders, preparing specimens for analysis, and other duties.
The first step in becoming a certified phlebotomist is finding an accredited phlebotomy training program. There are many different programs available, so it is important to do your research to find the one that best meets your needs. Check out the schools’ websites to compare programs.

Nevada phlebotomy program requirements
In order to become a certified phlebotomist, you must complete an accredited phlebotomy training program and pass an exam. Nevada is one of the few states that require certification. To be eligible to attend training, you need to:
- Be 18 years old
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Proof of immunization
- State DL or ID
All phlebotomy training programs must be accredited by a recognized accrediting body in order to be eligible for certification. In the United States, there are a number of accrediting bodies for phlebotomy training programs, including the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) and the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
These entities also provide testing, and some provide continuing education units (CEUs). CEUs are required to maintain your license, which needs to be renewed every two years. There are exemptions to attending an accredited phlebotomy technician school to earn certification if you have experience and a certain number of verifiable clinical hours.
Level one certification programs provide you with a CPTI certification. These programs typically last between one to two semesters and include both classroom and clinical components. Upon completion of a training program, you will be eligible to take the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam.
Subjects covered include:
- Anatomy and physiology
- Basic phlebotomy
- Safety and sanitation
- History of phlebotomy
- Legal issues
A typical phlebotomy training program will require theory on a variety of topics, including medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, infection control, and safety procedures. You will also learn how to properly collect and handle blood samples. In addition, you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through clinical rotations.
Phlebotomists work in a variety of settings, from hospitals and clinics to blood donation centers and research laboratories. They may also work in doctor’s offices, nursing homes, and other healthcare facilities.
Most work in hospitals or laboratories, but there are also traveling phlebotomists. These workers travel to different healthcare facilities to collect blood specimens. They may also be responsible for training new phlebotomists and helping to ensure that blood collection procedures are carried out safely and effectively.
Phlebotomy Programs by Nevada Cities:
Phlebotomy technicians play an important role in the medical community and often work with patients and families. They typically work on a full-time basis, though some may work part-time or on an as-needed basis. Certified technicians are in high demand due to the increasing demand for blood donations, and the job outlook for phlebotomists is good, with projected growth of 10% from 2020 to 2030. The Bureau of Labor Statistics May 2021 job report states that there are more than 900 phlebotomists in the state.
|Where Phlebotomists Work||% of Jobs|
|Other ambulatory healthcare services||14%|
|Outpatient care centers||1%|
After becoming a certified phlebotomist, you will have the opportunity to pursue a variety of career paths. Many phlebotomists find employment in hospitals, clinics, or blood donation centers. Others choose to work in research laboratories or doctor’s offices. Still, others find positions in the insurance industry or with government agencies.
In addition to traditional job settings, there are also many non-traditional career options available for phlebotomists. For example, you could use your skills and training to become a mobile phlebotomist, working with patients in their homes or other community settings. You could also choose to work as a traveling phlebotomist, providing services to patients in rural areas. With the right experience and training, you can become:
- Medical lab Technician
- Research Scientist
- Medical supply sales representative
- Teacher or trainer
- Phlebotomy school ower
Whatever career path you choose to pursue, you will find that becoming a certified phlebotomy technician (CPT) will open up a world of possibilities.
